Kahlúa Crushed Iced Coffee
It's quite possible that we have a small coffee obsession in this house. To me and the hubs, the best cup of coffee is unsweetened with a splash of full fat cream and loads of crushed ice. But, it's the weekend, the weather is still swampy hot and we could use a little afternoon coffee buzz that can slowly carry us into a boozy nighttime buzz. And so this Kahlúa Crushed Iced Coffee was born!
This tasty beverage takes our love of iced coffee and adds a tiny touch of boozy sweetness with Kahlúa coffee liquor and a quick Kahlúa whipped cream. The Kahlúa and coffee get blended together to create a refreshing coffee slushy that doesn't go overboard on alcohol or sweetness.
You can brew your own batch of coffee or use your favorite store bought version. We've gone through a lot of different coffee brewing phases over the last few years and while we still love the French Press method (check out our French Press post here!), we've recently switched back to the old faithful pour over method.
If you're using your favorite pre-made brew, you'll use 1½ cups of coffee. If you're brewing your own using a pour over method, you'll pour 2 cups of *not quite boiling* hot water over 4-5 scoops of ground coffee. You should end up with 1½ cups of steamy hot, fresh brewed coffee.
While the coffee is cooling down, you can make the Kahlúa whipped cream. The cream is definitely an optional finishing touch, but come on....it's boozy whipped cream! The easiest way to whip it up is going to be with an electric stand mixer. I like to put the mixing bowl in the freezer for a few minutes to help everything along.
Once the bowl is chilled, add 1 oz. of Kahlúa & 1 cup heavy cream into electric mixing bowl & mix (starting on a lower setting and gradually building to a medium/high) for around 6 minutes or until stiff peaks form. Transfer the whipped cream to piping bag or a small airtight container and move to the refrigerator.
In a blender, add about 5 cups of ice, the brewed coffee, 1/4 cup of half & half and about 1 oz. of Kahlúa. Blend it up until you get a nice, slushy concoction. Pour into whatever glass you fancy and top it off with some of that Kahlúa whipped cream. You can practice your best swirl if you're using a piping bag or just plop a dollop right into the glass! My swirly skills could use some work, but I'm happy to devote some time to nailing a whipped cream swirl!
